What To Expect
The SOULWELL Journey is a Spiritual Formation Retreat.
Spiritual formation is the ongoing journey of becoming more like Christ through the work of the Holy Spirit and intentional rhythms in our daily lives. It’s about shaping our heart, mind, and spirit so we grow in a deeper relationship with God. Over time, that growth transforms our character and flows outward in love toward others.

Why Do I Have To Sign Up For All Three Retreats At One Time?
Transformation happens incrementally, over time, in community. The SOULWELL Journey offers you an intentional path to that end by spreading the content over three weekends that build on each other. By signing up, you’re making a commitment to yourself to start and finish well. If you have more questions about this, please contact us at info@soulwellministries.com.
What Will I Be Doing on the Retreats?
The SOULWELL Journey is experiential in nature, and each retreat grounded in scripture. Our intention is to teach you different ways to experience God and deepen your relationship with Him. None of these ways are new – Jesus modeled them for us, and many leaders within our faith practiced them regularly. However, over time many of these foundational spiritual practices have been lost by the church, or simply stopped due to the changes of culture and the “busyness” of life.
We’ll have large group teaching and sharing, as well as time in designated small groups. There will also be personal time to help you rest and process with God what you have learned.
The first two weekends will begin Friday morning and end Sunday afternoon, while the third weekend begins Thursday morning and ends Sunday afternoon. This one time investment in your relationship with God will pay dividends for the rest of your life.
What If I have An Emergency And Can't Attend One Of The Retreats?
We know that life happens and will do our best to help you make up what you’ve missed, either at home or the next gathering. However, some things can’t be recreated outside of the retreat space. We can refund your money for the food portion, but not your payment for lodging. You’ll be invited to attend the same retreat during the next session at a discounted price, so you can experience it in community and continue your journey.
What is Spiritual Formation?
At our core, we’re spiritual people. There’s something deep within us that shapes how we see the world, how we see ourselves, and the choices we make every day. But most of us rarely slow down long enough to explore that inner life.
Spiritual formation is simply the ongoing journey of opening our hearts to a deeper connection with God. It’s not about trying harder — it’s about walking with Him and becoming more aware of His presence and invitation in our lives.
Jesus said, “I came that you might have life and have it to the fullest” (John 10:10). We believe that kind of life is real and available. As we allow Jesus to heal what’s wounded and reshape what’s been formed by fear or pressure, we begin to step into the person He created us to be. And that’s why we’re excited to share this journey with you.
Why is a Spiritual Formation Important?
When we truly draw close to God, something changes in us. Real intimacy with Him brings freedom and a deep sense of fullness in our souls. But if we’re honest, a lot of us don’t always experience that kind of life.
We find ourselves wondering, “If God is with me, why don’t I feel more joy? Why does this still feel so hard?” We try harder. We pray more. We push through. And instead of feeling alive, we feel tired and discouraged. Over time, we start guarding our hearts to avoid more disappointment. We stop looking inward. And slowly, we can begin to feel disconnected — even from God.
Spiritual formation is about rediscovering the relationship we were meant to have with Him. It’s not rigid or mechanical. It’s living, growing, and whole. It’s allowing God to meet us beneath the surface and renew us from the inside out.
What Does The Bible Say About Spiritual Formation?
The Bible has a lot to say about Spiritual Formation. Below are just a few passages that encourage us in spiritual renewal.
And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. – 2 Corinthians 4:16
But that isn’t what you learned about Christ. Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life…Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God – truly righteous and holy. – 1 Timothy 4:7-8
Each of you is now a new person. You are becoming more and more like your Creator, and you will understand him better. – Titus 2:11-14
What is Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual direction is the practice of being with people as they attempt to deepen their relationship with God. The person seeking direction shares stories of their encounters of God, or how they are cultivating a life attuned to spiritual things. The director listens and asks questions to assist them in their process of reflection and spiritual growth.
Spiritual direction can be done in a group setting or one-on-one with a certified Spiritual Director. In the SOULWELL Journey, we do group work as well as offer opportunities for one-on-one sessions.
Spiritual direction is help given by one Christian to another which enables that person to pay attention to God’s personal communication to him or her, to respond to this personally communicating God, to grow in intimacy with this God, and to live out the consequences of the relationship.
“Spiritual direction is, in reality, nothing more than a way of leading us to see and obey the real Director, the Holy Spirit hidden in the depths of our soul.” – by Father Keaton
What is a Spiritual Director?
God really does give us what we need to live with peace in this moment — even when life feels anything but peaceful. A good spiritual director simply helps us hold on to that trust when it’s hard to see.
Spiritual direction is really just walking alongside someone in their spiritual life. You might think of it as holy listening, spiritual friendship, or sharing a sacred journey together.
At the end of the day, God is the true Director. He’s the One who speaks to the heart. A spiritual director isn’t there to fix you, give advice, or solve your problems. Instead, they help you slow down and notice how God might already be inviting you into something deeper.
What is Contemplative Prayer?
Like all prayer, contemplation isn’t something we accomplish. It’s not another spiritual goal to reach or level to unlock. It happens when we finally realize that real change doesn’t come from our effort, but from God’s grace and love. When we stop trying to manufacture transformation and simply open ourselves to Him, something shifts.
We can create space by paying attention and becoming more aware — but we can’t force the outcome. In quiet, trusting stillness, we’re simply admitting that God is God. He is the beginning and the end, the One who holds both the journey and the destination of our prayer.
What is a Spiritual Discipline?
Spiritual disciplines are simply practices that help us grow in our faith. They’re part of the normal rhythm of following Jesus — not a checklist, but habits that shape us over time. These practices help strengthen our inner life, the part of us that has been made new in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).
At the center of it all is God’s Word. Spending time reading Scripture, thinking about it, praying, and worshiping helps keep our hearts aligned with Him. These rhythms don’t make us earn anything — they just help us stay connected and grow into the people He’s shaping us to be.
